By knowing the great variety of dishes in Peruvian food, capable of satisfying the most diverse and demanding tastes, I was wondering which could be the most popular and recommended Peruvian dishes in the US.

Many of the distinctive Peruvian dishes are not easy to find in American ground, and this is maybe the reason for your favorite dish not to be in this list.

I took the liberty to make a small poll and here I present the results. I simply asked: What is your favorite Peruvian dish? I didn’t make difference between main dishes, appetizers or desserts. Enjoy and review the list and check if your favorite dish is in it.

1. Ceviche


Without a doubt this is the insignia dish of Peruvian food. It doesn’t surprise me that I see it in the top spot of the list. Just by thinking about it, I feel like going to the beach, take some sun, have a beer and enjoy the fresh and exquisite taste of this delicacy.

2. Lomo Saltado

This dish could also be in the first place. It was a very close second. The abundant pieces of sautéed and flamed meat, accompanied with onions, tomatoes and our tasteful yellow chili pepper, make this dish one of the most ordered meals in a Peruvian restaurant in the US.

3.Ají de Gallina

This is another of the favorite dishes for Peruvian people with great taste. No wonder why this is my favorite dish. Who could be able to resist its creamy and spicy taste of this delicious plate? Its great flavor is based, to a large degree, in our unparalleled yellow chili pepper.

4. Pollo a la Brasa

There is no doubt that Peruvian food has too many temptations. You just have to see a juicy and crispy Pollo a la Brasa (rotisserie chicken), served with French fries and delicious chili pepper, specially prepared for the occasion. 5. Causa Limeña

This is another of the delights of Peruvian food. Enjoy the taste of our exquisite yellow potato, mixed with the fascinating texture and scent of the yellow chili pepper, pieces of chicken or tuna, avocado, mayonnaise and more ingredients that make this dish a one way trip to heaven.

6. Anticuchos


This is another gem in Peruvian cuisine, that can be tasted in every corner in Peru. We can also find it in some Peruvian restaurants in the US. It is prepared with grilled beef heart, roasted potatoes, our delicious Peruvian corn and a wide variety of chili only found in Peru. Don’t forget to ask for a delicious Chicha Morada to complete the master play.

7. Papa a la Huancaina

This simple, but delicious Peruvian dish, is one of the most widely accepted in the US, among foreigners, and it is not a coincidence, given the fact that it has the star ingredient of the Peruvian cuisine: the yellow chili pepper. It also has fresh cheese, milk and other traditional ingredients that make this a majestic dish.

8. Tallarines Verdes con Bistec

This is, without a doubt, one of my favorites. The taste of the basil and spinach perfectly mixed with fresh cheese and parmesan make this dish a real treat. The flavors are better when accompanied with a delicious Papa a la Huancaina. It can be served with a steak, chicken or fish.

9. Arroz Chaufa de Mariscos

This dish is a product of the imagination and creativity of the Peruvian cuisine. It comes from the mixture of two exquisite dishes: the Arroz Chaufa, a Chinese-Peruvian fusion and the delicacy of our sea.. The final product: you be the judge.

10. Jalea

For the seafood enthusiasts, we could not miss this irresistible dish for sight, smell and, above all, taste. Generous slices of fried fish as a base covered with the diverse seafood abundant in our Peruvian sea. It is served with a special onion, tomato, Peruvian lemon and species sauce. In your next visit to a Peruvian restaurant, don’t hesitate for a second to ask for this. You won’t regret it.

11. Arroz con Pollo (Pato)

A very traditional dish of Peruvian food, where the coriander’s taste and smell is highlighted. It is also accompanied with Papa a la Huancaina  or ceviche. Personally, I like adding lemon juice to the mix. This plate is very popular in the daily life of the Peruvian people, because it is not only delicious, but also very nutritious.

12. Papa Rellena

In my opinion, this dish should have been placed higher in this list. This is one of my favorites. It might be that it is not yet very well known in the Peruvian restaurants in the US, but there is no doubt that it will gain its right place. The pleasure of tasting this dish, accompanied with Salsa Criolla and a good portion of yellow chili pepper sauce, is without compare.

In my opinion, a list with only 12 dishes is not enough. Specially knowing that Peru has a wide variety of dishes, one even more delicious than the other.

There were some missing dishes like: Arroz con Mariscos, tiradito, seco de cabrito, Pescado Sudado and so many more. For this reason, I ask you to comment which is your favorite, or which one you think should have been on the list. I assure you that we will all like to know your thoughts.
